Format
Big Brother is the daddy of all reality TV shows. Created by John De Mol and debuting in the Netherlands in 1999, it has since gone on to become a primetime smash hit in over 70 countries. In the UK, it is back for its’ tenth series. The show revolves around sixteen ‘housemates’, who are locked in the Big Brother house for thirteen weeks. During this time, they are completely cut off from the outside world, and filmed 24 hours a day.
A weekly task is set by Big Brother to determine how much the housemates get for their shopping budget, which is used to buy enough food and neccessities to last for the following seven days. From the shopping budget, housemates can purchase ‘tokens’. These can be used to obtain ‘luxuries’ such as a day’s worth of hot water, or an hour’s use of hair dryers or straighteners. Other, smaller tasks are also set from time to time, with prizes such as a takeaway meal or a party. A number of twists and surprises, such as secret rooms, double or midweek evictions and the arrival of new housemates, are sprung on contestants throughout their stay. During the final week, viewers vote for who they want to win the series. The housemate that gets the most votes is crowned the winner, and bags a cash prize of £100,000. All housemates must stick to a strict set of rules whilst they are on the show. Failure to abide by the rules will result in a punishment, the most extreme of which is ejection from the Big Brother house. However, there is one rule that is more important than all the others: Big Brother reserves the right to change the rules at any time. |

Their aim is to survive regular ‘evictions’ and be the last person to leave the house.Every Monday, the housemates nominate two of their peers for the subsequent eviction. The two or more housemates with the most nominations face a public vote, before the person with the most votes leaves during a special show, hosted by Davina McCall. Alternatively, they are free to leave voluntarily at any time.
