BB decision expected this year
C4 slashes 10% from programme budget

Channel 4 will make a decision on whether to renew their contract for Big Brother ‘within the year’, according to a report.

The broadcaster’s director of television, Kevin Lygo, apparently confirmed the news earlier this week, the Daily Mail has claimed. They will cut at least £60million (10%) from their £600million programming budget over the next twelve months.

Their current deal with producers Endemol runs out next year after the eleventh series of the show. It is also believed to include a seventh Celebrity series, to be broadcast this winter.

They’re doing that this year? Why aren’t they doing it next year?

What if they don’t renew and Big Brother 11 turns out to be a huge hit?

yeah or they renew it and bb11 turns out to be rubbish

Hope they do renew it :)

That would bring the budget down to around £540m. I don’t think they’ll run into another near £200m deal again with that budget. It was at the top of its game last time the contract was renewed; sadly it was at the bottom of its game the following year.

If they want to continue Channel 4 will probably try and get the contract for around £60m, anything more I don’t think they’ll bother with. But it suggests contract negotiations will be open on Endemol’s side so even if Channel 4 don’t want it, I wouldn’t rule out another channel picking it up especially in these economic times and channels wanting cheap filler …

I also wouldn’t be surprised if from BB12 onwards (if they want it) they just start to renew it series by series rather than a few series’ ahead.

I keep getting thoughts here and have to make a new comment … sorry about that LOL

Anyway I think also if it is to continue they’ll ensure Celeb BB is no longer in the contract after this years failure

Steve: Its because its pre-BB. When it gets started im sure there will be lots of discussion ;)

Steve - that’s something baffling us too, especially as our hit ratio compares well with some similar sites.

Jack - it’s better they axe it with notice so we know BB11 is the final series, rather than doing what the Aussies did and making the decision mid-series, or even worse, making the decision at the end of the series and the show not getting any sort of goodbye on screen.

I expect BB will still be around after series 11, it is C4’s biggest show.

If a part of BB has to go, lets hope it’s just CBB, and not the main version!

Hmm Brekkie, its quite intresting! I find some of BBSpy’s posts a lot more detailed than other site’s ones, and other’s still get more! Maybe when the BB10 site comes out for BBSpy you will get a few more…

As long as I get to experience BB before the show dies, I don’t care if it gets a permanent hiatus [although a short 1 would be preferable], it’s been great.

I think personally they should renew contracts year by year and have cbb and big brother hyjack 1 year and the main one the next.and cut down the number of weeks for the main one to 11 weeks or even 10?? anyone think the same?

Brekkie says: May 10, 2009 @ 11:11 pm

Celebrity BB should definately go now and all efforts be focused on the main series. I just don’t see how they can justify spending hundreds of thousands just to pay the celebs to do it - ideally it would be great to go back to the days of CBB1/2 when they genuinely did it for charity, but then I’m a Celeb came along and started paying the celebs, so unfortunately that was the end of that.
