The Daily Star has claimed that Channel 4 are preparing to axe Big Brother after the forthcoming tenth series ends later this year.
The paper, which is infamous for publishing high amounts of false BB-related stories, quotes an ‘insider’ as saying: “Shortly after the Celebrity version of the show, key members of staff were told it was ‘highly unlikely’ to return.
“Everyone was disappointed but most people realise it has run its course.
“This year may be the final chance for many people to step inside the house, earn their 15 minutes of fame and cash in on the show’s popularity.
“There’s still a tiny hope it will return but it’s 99% certain it will be 10 and out for the show.
“It’s not the social experiment it once was and has lost its appeal for alot of young people.”
The exact same story has also been published on the websites of magazines OK!, Star and New!, which are all sister publications of the Daily Star.
However, Channel 4’s current contract with Endemol for the rights air the show, which is thought to be worth £180million, runs out in 2010 after Big Brother 11. The deal was secured in 2006.
The show was brought to the UK in 2000. Since then, a total of eighteen series have aired - nine regular series, six celebrity series, a teen series, and spin-offs Big Brother Panto and Big Brother Celebrity Hijack.
