Channel 4 drops voting donations
Cost of voting remains the same

Channel 4 have announced today that it will not be making any donations to charity from phone voting revenues this year.

The ongoing recession has been blamed for the decision, as a slump in advertising revenues has forced the broadcaster to make a number of cuts, a notable one being the axing of the 24-hour red button live feed.

They revealed that the phone voting service has been causing them to lose money recently and that it was no longer possible for them to subsidise it.

A Channel 4 spokesman told MediaGuardian: “The costs associated with running the Big Brother vote line have meant it has run at a considerable loss for the last couple of years.

“Given the current climate, after very careful consideration, Channel 4 has regretfully decided not to make charity donations for this series of Big Brother in order to limit this loss and ensure we are managing our finances optimally to allow us to continue delivering our public service remit.”

He added that the voting was run “purely on a for-profit basis” before 2006, and that Channel 4 is only one of a number of commercial broadcasters not to profit from premium rate services.

Previously, 10p per call was donated to a number of chosen charities. The cost of a vote remains at 35p.

Phone voting raised £300,000 for charity in the ninth series of Big Brother last year.

Not unexpected though. When introduced for BB7 it was on the assumption of 10m+ votes a series. Last year they got 3m.

so channel 4 are pocketing the money. Well as someone annoyed at channel 4 regarding the live streaming I will not put money into channel 4’s pockets so I WILL NOT VOTE. lets see how channel 4 and BB like that when they have no votes on eviction night. Who do they evict then.

I sincerely think that C4 are now trying to bury BB once and for all so that they don’t have to even bother with the final contracted show next year.

Taking away charity donations is just another way of generating bad feeling for BB across the media, further turning people off watching it.

Personally, I think it’s sickening the way that they are treating this show that has made them so much money in the past. Driving it into the ground because it no longer suits C4’s programming policy and is no longer the uber cash cow to justify it’s ‘trash TV’ existence is no way to see it off, or to treat it’s fans.

Basically, there has always been an element amongst the C4 upper tiers that has hated BB and everything it represents, but it always made a lot of money so it got left alone. This is no longer the case and it’s showing in every decision that is made regarding the program.

Tragic end to a legend imo.

Really though if it’s not viable it is better to cut the charity donation rather than raise the price back up to 50p and force voters to donate that 10p.

Anyone who is that bothered about it is still able to donate an amount of their choice to a charity of their choice should they decide too.
