Endemol and C4 in live feed showdown
Will the red button live stream return?
endemol-and-c4-in-live-feed-showdown

OK, there is a lot of conflicting information about today’s non-crisis crisis meeting as Endemol chiefs and C4 bosses met to discuss the fallout from the first days of Big Brother.

Top of the agenda was the huge backlash from fans regarding the axing of the live feed, both on the red button and during the day on E4, which has triggered the most complaints of any C4 show over the last three months and over 2000 signatures to an online petition calling for live 24/7 streaming to be reinstated, with Endemol especially concerned these complaints were coming from the most loyal fans of the show.

In addition, ratings over the first weekend have been the lowest for any launch weekend of Big Brother, with just 1.8m tuning in to the non-housemate eviction last night.

These rumours have appeared on various forums, fansites and individual Facebook accounts, so it’s difficult to accredit them all to sources, but to summarise, these are the main points today from the last 4 hours.

NOTE:  These are all rumours and should be treated as such.   They have not been verified by either Endemol or Channel 4, and bbspy is not suggesting anything of the following is true.  Or false.

  • Firstly, shortly after 4pm the first reports that the meeting had been successful were posted on Digital Spy by mrmarky, an insider who has posted reliable information in the past.   Shortly afterwards another two sources who have previously provided reliable information appeared to back up the news that the live “red button” feed would be reinstated, but it would be a few days before it could be put into place.
  • Separate, unconfirmed, sources suggested that despite the huge number of complaints received over the axing of the live feed, and Endemol’s concern these complaints were from the fans of the show, not the critics, C4 were refusing to re-evaluate their decision, which led to Endemol issuing an ultimatum - reinstate the live feed or we’ll pull the series.
  • Another unconfirmed rumour is that Endemol left the meeting believing the live feed would be reinstated, but senior bosses at C4 then over-ruled the decision.
  • A number of people have contacted C4 since the rumours first leaked, and their official line is still that there will be no increase in live coverage and that the red button feed won’t be returning.
  • However, later this evening more sources from within Endemol have come forward to say the live feed will be reinstated, but it will not be officially announced until everything is in place for it to happen, which will take a few days.
  • Later speculation implied there could be disagreement about how to announce it’s return, with C4 wanting Endemol to handle it, but Endemol believing it is up to C4 to face the humiliation of admitting they were in the wrong and that they had underestimated the importance of the live feed to the fans.

And hence, we’re all rather confused.

For what it’s worth, bbspy did contact C4 earlier this evening and the official word was it is not returning - but as reported, if it is returning C4, in their wisdom, have decided to hold off announcing it until later in the week.

Therefore, either way it is important C4 continue to be made aware of how strongly Big Brother fans feel about the axing of the live feed, and how important we believe it being reinstated is.   To contact C4, click here.

johnnybb says: June 8, 2009 @ 9:29 pm

any house map yet ?

Brekkie says: June 8, 2009 @ 9:32 pm

Steve - it would presumably be the red button accessed via E4 on Sky,and possibly Virgin.

Steve’Lee says: June 8, 2009 @ 9:36 pm

So only people who have sky/virgin could watch it ?

Ryan.B says: June 8, 2009 @ 9:43 pm

it should come bac to freeview as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brekkie says: June 8, 2009 @ 9:43 pm

That’s been the case most years Steve’Lee - it’s only been available 24/7 on Freeview when C4 had a spare stream in preparation for the launch of a new channel (such as Film4).

Still no word on expanding E4 coverage - I think we all kind of expected that would come first as a compromise for no 24/7 live feed, but if rumours are to be believed Endemol have been pretty firm that they want it back 24/7.

although i dont miss the live feed i recognise that it is, in essence, part of the DNA of big brother and so cannot be missing.

Ben says: June 8, 2009 @ 10:20 pm

I dont believe a word of it tbh sorry guys thats my opinion . If it does come back great , but if it doesnt i will be unhappy but we’ll just have to live without it !!

It finally looks like all the complaining and the petitions is getting us fans somewhere. Let’s just hope these rumors aren’t false hope eh?

lorraine says: June 8, 2009 @ 11:15 pm

lets hope this talk is true however Davina’s twitter did ask fans to contact channel 4 direct. She also said she only gets to see BB just like us, she looks forward to going in on a Friday because then she can watch live streaming from the production room. (lucky her) Davina was and always has been a great lover of the live streaming, You could tell she knew that the reason people had not seen Benazers better health from Saturday to Sunday is because we have no ability to watch the house from 6am until 11pm. Even worse now as during the week no feed from 6.20am until 1am the following day. Most of the housemates have gone to bed by 4am(we think but time can’t be confirmed) thats 3 hours per 24 of any housemates being awake. Totally rubbish, the website on channel 4 has 4 new updated all day today and one video clip. At this rate I’m I have no real idea what they are like in the house. I have suspicions some of the stuff is scripted but I hate to think that.

Brekkie says: June 8, 2009 @ 11:21 pm

I have quite a bit of respect for how Davina handled this on Twitter, considering she’s in a pretty awkward position.

She could have so easily ignored it, but she did as promised ask the producers why, and got the same bullshit reasons we had, and when pressed further she encouraged people to sign a petition, rather than keeping stum.

lorraine says: June 8, 2009 @ 11:23 pm

I must add I do not count the highlights as genuinely watching the housemates. I have been a official LUTer for channel 4 when we had internet live streaming way back in BB2 and BB edit the scenes do badly that they can make black seem white. I have never trusted highlights and thats why channel 4 want the fans to only have that really so they can censor what we see. Censorship in this country is wrong. Other Europeon Countries don’t have it, So why should the adult british public be treated like children that need to be protected. This show is a good social education of peoples behaviour and as a mother and more mature person, I resent being treated like some innocent child. I have lived long enough to earn that respect from a TV station.

anne says: June 8, 2009 @ 11:26 pm

Keep the campaign going that is all we can do at the moment.
Fundamentally this is an enormous farce which basically is due to the ineptitude of those in control. I feel that the distress this has caused fans is despicable and evidences the lack of care for the audience in general.

BB10RIP says: June 8, 2009 @ 11:41 pm

As Ive said elsewhere I think CH4 are playing games using the ‘insiders’ to spread disinformation on the forums to buy time. They think ratings will bounce back in a few days and then the can say to sponsor etc ‘Oh a few hardcore fans complained to begin with but look ratings are as good as ever nothing to worry about everything we have done is great blah blah’.

lorraine says: June 8, 2009 @ 11:58 pm

well CH4 are dead wrong. Voting will only line BBs pockets now they have stopped donating the 10p to charity and with only 1-4 hours of awake housemates to watch and an incompetent official website. 1.8 million veiwers will be the highest this whole series as more just turn off and away from channel 4 and E4 as a station rather than just a show.. BBc and ITV must be laughing their socks off and the amount of veiwers their getting at this time of year.

Also I know someone at Blockbuster who says for the first weekend of BB they were run off their feet. Well we know why..

Pauline says: June 9, 2009 @ 3:32 pm

Does anyone if they C4 decided if they are bringing back the LF yet.

BB10RIP says: June 9, 2009 @ 3:44 pm

Pauline,
I would ignore the rumours I suspect alot of this is a calculated campaign by CH4 sanctioned Stoogies to try and reduce the amount of complaint emails they are getting over this issue and buy some time to turn things arround without having to give in to people wanting it reinstated etc. Ive said as much in other threads

Brekkie says: June 9, 2009 @ 4:00 pm

Lots of rumours today, most of which probably unfounded, but it seems to be more than a stand-off than a showdown at the moment between Endemol and C4.

BB10RIP says: June 9, 2009 @ 5:10 pm

Yes Brekkie. Still think CH4 are playing games leaking disinformation to disrupt viewers protests for the reasons Ive said previously.

Danzi says: June 9, 2009 @ 7:17 pm

Good news, but why would it not be on freeview!
I only have freeview, and its been on freeview before! For chanels red button settings, dont all the digital services have the same, as its the channles not the digital tv companies?

Brekkie says: June 9, 2009 @ 7:55 pm

All the red button is is a short-cut to an actual channel, and on Freeview channel space is much more limited, and C4 are using all their other slots for services, including E4+1 and C4+1, which are commercially viable. The only reason we had it in the past was because C4 had the stream in advance of launching a new channel.

On Sky and Virgin, C4 have more channels at their disposal, and though not currently showing Big Brother, the channel which has been used for the live feed is still showing as being assigned to C4, so still available should C4 see sense and make a U-Turn.

Beef Stew says: June 9, 2009 @ 11:25 pm

We need the live feed back, i miss it loads , its so not the same without it

lorraine says: June 10, 2009 @ 11:49 am

last night again the last housemates dogface and sree went to bed a mere 188 minutes into live streaming take away the adverts and it shows just how little of the housemates we have to go on. in fact halfwit wasn’t even in the live streaming as he has already gone to bed. Another point from last night is that an argument must have happpened or something as a few of the housemates were commenting about something. But nothing on the website they seemed to be too interested in a shower incident between dogface and caireon which seems to have been a lame thing. So we went into live streaming nearly a full twenty four hours after we had last seen then awake on live feed completely in the dark. I am beginnning to feel its getting pointless trying to keep track with such a poor information coming from BB. The channel 4 website is pointless and tomorrow will be all about ex housemate Nikki and I can’t stand her one bit total fake wanabee. So I feel sorry for the housemates if they are real and not actors because they will come out and people will not recognise them because more will have switched off. I just would love to know how many actually voted out of the 1.9 million who watched the eviction on Sunday can anyone find out the number of votes? it that published? is it 1% or 10%?

lorraine says: June 10, 2009 @ 1:06 pm

Brekke went onto the CH4 BB offical website today at 12.45pm so so angry I sent channel 4 website this email:

what is going on with this so called replacement for the live streaming its been terrible the website is so poor and its not been updated for 14 hours 45 minutes. Your telling us that nothing has happened that the BB FANS want to see rubbish. We know the website drill by now and this is terrible. Don’t forget the fan sites are ran by ordinary people or in the past the media like Sun and Daily star and due to no live streaming nobody has anything. So all the money CH4 divered to this website seems to have been wasted as the website obviously isn’t being ran corrrectly. if you want to be instead of live streaming then it should have been done like the L.U.T was on the forums, but obviously the people running the website are not BB fans therefore do not have the dedication or the love of the show to invest that much time and effert into providing a great service for the fans. Fans like myself who were LUTers freely gave our time to post for other fans unable to watch live streaming therefore keepiing everyone involved. you don’t seem to have that level of ability. If your not going to give us that level of service then. Reinstate the live 24/7streaming online before its too late or even join the fans in demanding the red button 24/7 back with less than 190 minutes of live coverage WHEN THE HOUSEMATES ARE AWAKE including adverts on the E4 tv channel this show is becoming detatched from the veiwer and loyal fans faster than any show I have ever noticed ever. I have said for many years that covereage has been dwindling and instead of listening to the fans channel 4 have taken more away. How can that be right. Endomol and Davina are clear its not them but channel 4 and the fans are being made aware on many fan sites of this and the channel itself will suffer with people threatening to actually not even watch anything on channel 4 or E4. Also tonight the England match I have not spoken via person or internet over the last 24hrs who will watch the highlights of BB instead of the match because of now feeling so detached from the house and housemates.

Your meant to have been provided with the money to provide the best possible updates that we do not miss anything from the house well then if thats the case. You should all be fired as that is not being provided. Your not listening to the fans Big Big mistake Huge.

I thought you may understand and would like your feedback I’ll keep you informed if I receive a reply from them but the last few years have shown me it will be nothing more than a pre-organised SHUTDOWN reply.

Brekkie says: June 10, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

The website is the biggest insult really, especially when it’s used as the justification.

If it was updated hourly (during the day at least) with regular video clips of the key moment of the last hour the heat might be taken off the live feed situation. But it’s barely updated at all until late afternoon, when they put a handful of back-dated articles up before they go home for the night.

Nobody cares if Nikki is making tea for them today - they want updates on this years housemates, not those from 3 years ago.
