More ratings woe for Big Brother
40% drop on equivalent 2008 show
more-ratings-woe-for-big-brother

Big Brother’s ratings woes continued last night with the show dipping below 2m viewers - the lowest ever ratings for a Monday night edition.

Including the 164,000 watching on C4+1, a total of just 1.97m watched last nights 10pm show, a massive 40% drop on the equivalent show last year, which attracted 3.3m, a figure which itself was deemed “very very disappointing”.

Big Brother’s competition in the 10pm slot last night including the news on BBC1, which attracted 5.8m, and News at Ten on ITV1, which pulled in 2.4m viewers.

The latest figure follows Big Brother’s worst ever opening weekend, with just 5.1m tuning in for the launch, 3.0m watching on Friday, 2.2m on Saturday and 1.9m watching the non-housemate eviction on Sunday.

its all going to end soon if this keeps up. BB has been great so far this year, its a shame nobody wants to watch it anymore. i hope something good happens soon with the ratings.

d0od says: June 9, 2009 @ 1:39 pm

Weren’t Channel 4 or Endemol quoted as saying that Big Brother wasn’t going to be axed etc as long as it continued to deliver ratings of 3 million?

Scott says: June 9, 2009 @ 1:42 pm

its bcos its on @ 10 not 9, 10 is far too late as people r too tired too watch it.!!!!!!

BB10RIP says: June 9, 2009 @ 1:47 pm

Well no real suprise. Many tried to tell them with all the cuts It wouldnt work after CBB then they make even more cuts !

Tonights ratings will be interesting as there will be No excuses possible. Cant argue that people didnt watch last night as alot of it was rerun of the Non HM eviction on Sunday even. Sub 2Million Im guessing again.

Then on Wednesday last 20 minutes of Highlights clashes with England World Cup FootBall. If tread continues 1.5 Million is not impossible that night !

Brekkie says: June 9, 2009 @ 2:33 pm

Scott - the show was on at 10pm for the first six years and rarely dipped below 4m.

Matt says: June 9, 2009 @ 2:40 pm

Have to agree with Scott.

I can’t be bothered to stay up ’till 11.10 when I have important stuff the next day.

More would watch at 9 without a doubt.

hulagirl says: June 9, 2009 @ 2:50 pm

i like it on at 10 as when its on at nine i sometimes sky plus it if other things are on

Just got this email about 10 mins ago..

Dear Alec,

Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries regarding BIG BROTHER.

I can assure you that, at present, there are no discussions at Channel 4
with regards to bringing back the red button 24 hour streaming facility. Any
updates or changes to this decision will be announced through the normal
media channels.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us.

I think a consistent slot is key - from BB7-9 it moved about too much and you didn’t know from one night to the next if it was at 9pm or 10pm.

Personally I’ve always preferred the 10pm slot as I think BB is best served up as desert, rather than the main course - but this year the 9pm slot is much less competitive than usual, especially from ITV who seem to have given up for the summer.

BB10RIP says: June 9, 2009 @ 3:39 pm

Got a feeling now that this is going to get even more of a farce and even the E4 overnight live feed is going to be curtailed or axed. I didnt see any adverts during last nights live coverage breaks other than advertising other C4/E4 shows and the lucozade stuff for BB. Did anyone else ? If not you can just imagine what we are going to hear next from them over cutting costs blah blah blah

Danzi says: June 9, 2009 @ 3:48 pm

Could this spell the end of BB?

I hope not, maybe what the show needs is a year or 2 off, so the team can perfect it for a big revival!

Dan! says: June 9, 2009 @ 4:00 pm

The amount of ratings might be affected by sky + viewers who would rather watch it the next day because of ppl at work and skwl.

Brekkie says: June 9, 2009 @ 4:16 pm

That’s the same every year though Dan, so it’s a fair comparison.

James Dean says: June 9, 2009 @ 5:03 pm

this is beacuse most of their viewers are the younger generation, and unlinke adult we have school/college the next day, and im too tired to stay up n watch it and then get up again 6.30 in the morning.

BB10RIP says: June 9, 2009 @ 5:06 pm

Agree Brekkie. Totally fair comparison. The Ratings are dire and if you look at tonights competition in the HL slot excuses end totally if it bombs. Im expecting it to flat line at arround the same as last night at approx 2 million

BB10RIP says: June 9, 2009 @ 5:08 pm

Exactly James. Thats why 24/7 live feed in whatever form was ideal as people could dip in and out at a time that suited their lifestyle

Dan! says: June 9, 2009 @ 5:28 pm

I didn’t whatch live feed tht much but im missin it! And ppl who go to work/school can basiclly only watch live in the weekeed beacuse its on so late at night.

Steve’Lee says: June 9, 2009 @ 6:55 pm

But what I dont get, is if their was not enough intrest/people watching the live feed during the day - what makes them think their will be more intrest at night?

daniel says: June 9, 2009 @ 7:45 pm

they have themselves to blame 100%. they themselves have killed the show. no liev feed = plumeting viewers

Ryan.B says: June 9, 2009 @ 7:47 pm

+++BREAKING NEWS+++

LIVE FEED HAS APPARENTLY BEEN REINSTATED AND A STATEMENT FROM CHANNEL 4 IS GOING TO BE PRINTED IN TOMORROWS ISSUE OF THE SUN NEWSPAPER….

im not sure whether this is true but any news is good news ryt?

Brekkie says: June 9, 2009 @ 7:57 pm

So many rumours Ryan it’s believe it when you see it.

There’s been rumours flying around all day that Endemol were ready to pull the plug and walk out on BB10 - and when BBLB went off air tonight, I thought they had.

Brekkie says: June 9, 2009 @ 8:13 pm

Alec - missed your post earlier but that still seems to be the party line.

That fact they say there are “no discussions”, not even we’ve discussed it again in response to the complaints but it’s still no, just shows how little they care about the viewer.

Matt says: June 9, 2009 @ 8:26 pm

Fans are killing BB and I’m going to have to blog about it soon.

Let Channel 4 do their own thing, or they will feel forced to end BB.

lorraine says: June 9, 2009 @ 8:32 pm

the fans have not and will not kill BB.

Without the fans we would not be on series 10. The problem is channel 4 I blamed BB ie endomol at first until BBLB on Friday when it became clear that BB and endomol blame channel 4. The live feed is at the root of BB even having live streaming last year on E4 and 12005 wasn’t good but this years farce is terrible for the veiwer and BB know it. I think channel 4 are getting adverse backlash now. As all they are showing in place is repeats.

Stu says: June 9, 2009 @ 8:39 pm

It’s not good blaming younger people needing to be in bed when the show goes out at 10, that’s no excuse in this age of SkyPlus, video/dvd recorders and the repeat next morning @ breakfast time. We need some hot love action or a controversey to get people’s interested again

Andy says: June 9, 2009 @ 10:47 pm

Im boycotting big brother. Im not gona watch again until they step in and BAN freddie from ever singing ever again.

lorraine says: June 10, 2009 @ 11:54 am

well we haven’t seen him on live streaming since about 2am Tuesday so as its now thursday I shouldn’t worry too much at this rate of coverage. I think on the highlights which is running 24 hours behind as the hour show actually only shows 40 minutes of house footage when you remove adverts and probably shows 2-4 minutes of each housemate, I’m sure it can’t ruin your total enjoyment if you only see that much of one housemate.

BB10RIP says: June 10, 2009 @ 12:00 pm

They will no doubt be trying to claim what a success last night was with 2.2 Million viewers including +1.

Its still the lowest Tuesday night rating EVER. Plus tonight its likely to be down again as England world cup qualifier on ITV1 overlaps 20 minutes. Sub 2 million again I think.

lorraine says: June 10, 2009 @ 12:07 pm

definetly I will not miss the England Match for highlights.

WHO WOULD. Especially this year for the reasons above. we already feel detacted from the show. Well I do, its like I know I’m missing so much and highlights may never answer the questions I have so why bother, It becoming too frustrating to watch as so much of what made BB great is no longer provided to the veiwer.

The Match will at least be full live coverage which is more than BB can give us.

Brekkie says: June 10, 2009 @ 12:37 pm

Andy - I’m with you on the singing ban. That’s why we want the live feed back - they have to cut it out on there!

Katrina says: June 10, 2009 @ 9:37 pm

I really hope they don’t get rid, it would be a big shame. I really hope ratings start to improve, or its not looking good!

lorraine says: June 10, 2009 @ 9:49 pm

brekkie have you seen davinas twitter, about the live streaming, thought you may be interested.

http://twitter.com/ThisisDavina

Brekkie says: June 10, 2009 @ 11:18 pm

Seen it yes. Interested no - not until we get the outcome we want.

Ironic too that despite us being told it’s all about the website Davina is kicking the official sites arse at the moment - loving her (predictably positive) tweets during the show.

And Matt will vouch for the fact that usually I can’t stand Twitter!

electrotek says: June 11, 2009 @ 5:24 pm

No wonder the ratings have dropped. If we can’t see ALL the nominations and ALL the reasons then we can’t make a valid judgment on the housemates and where they stand with each other. Giving edited ‘highlights’ is nothing short of bias and makes the whole show a biased joke. Looks like BBUK looks to review some BB Oz tapes where nominations were ALWAYS shown in full.

XFactor says: June 17, 2009 @ 9:49 am

Why not cut the shows to half an hour instead of an hour? When they had half hour shows everyone wanted more, now they have hour long shows no one’s watching.

Cas says: July 9, 2009 @ 11:43 am

If they would just put some NORMAL people in there it might be watchable. Why have they felt the need to recruit ever more extreme personalities each year? “I know, we’ll find the campest person in the country, and put them in with the biggest homophobe in the country…add a goth, a foreigner and whammo! Sparks, surely!?” No.

Kevin says: August 2, 2009 @ 11:05 am

Having been a BB fan since series 1, this is only the second time i have gone off a series so soon after the start (last one was 2007). Putting new people in half way through and even worse - putting current housemates ‘partner’ or ‘ex-partner’ in is just a farce and a big slap in the face to all the auditionees who queued for hours at the audition process in the chance of getting on the show yet these ‘partners’ get in without going through the same process everyone else has to go through! It’s not fair and just makes me not want to watch anymore - and then when they get ‘fed up’ - they just walk after a week or so???!!!….there are so many other people out there who would jump at the chance of appearing in the show yet these ‘timewasters’ get on just because they have a partner or ex-partner in house.
Big Brother should now be axed or at least they should get some other people to take over the running of the show and try get it back to what it once was!!

melanie says: August 6, 2009 @ 9:14 am

I think that this years big brother is one of the worst! They have only had afew of entertaining housemates including Noirin and Siavash.
Fix up channel 4 and stop putting nasty in sterotypes!

Nick says: August 14, 2009 @ 8:36 pm

Good! Hopefully they will axe this pile of garbage once and for all.

sandra towers says: August 20, 2009 @ 5:57 pm

this has been such a good year, one of the best the whole point of bb was 24hour coverage. c4 have gone out of their way to reduce the numbers watching.

Chelsea says: August 30, 2009 @ 10:32 pm

its being axed after next years series anyway, thank goodness!
