It’s not what you expect it to be
...and live nominations certainly weren't
its-not-what-you-expect-it-to-be

Day 21, 00.01am. Big Brother confirms live nominations, fans left disappointed. Fast forward to 11.10pm, and I’m pleasantly surprised…

As regular commenters will know, we get some complaints for being too negative towards the show, so it’s incredibly ironic I’m about to praise one element of this year’s series that has left a large number of fans unhappy.

Yes, live nominations. As soon as Channel 4’s press release announcing the twist hit my inbox on Tuesday afternoon, my heart sunk. I am one of the many who thought it was a waste of a live special.

After all, the producers had an extra thirty minutes of airtime to play with yesterday. Was live nominations the best twist they could come up with, especially as they were just regular nominations sped up to fit the time limit?

However, after seeing it play out on last night’s show, I can now say that  — for me at least — it was better than the face-to-face nominations twists used in recent series.

Taking it for what it was, I thought it was executed brilliantly. The show’s fast-paced nature made it a joy to watch.

The two lights in the Diary Room, which were illuminated when each housemate had 30 seconds left and when their time ran out, served their purpose well, but the icing on the cake for me was the graphics.

Who needs Marcus Bentley to narrate when you can put up a handy chart at the end of each turn telling us how many votes each housemate has?

If it meant that we’d be able to see them in full, I’d be happy for the producers to do a live nominations show every week, as Big Brother’s Australian sibling did.

But at the very least they need to impose a time limit on normal nominations, as we’ve now seen proof that there’s no need for Big Brother to drag the process out for hours on end.

The Outcome

However, I can’t say I was as happy with the outcome of the twist, as Halfwit and Angel –  two of my favourite housemates — are now facing eviction. It pains me that Sree (who is incredibly irritating) was only one nomination away from joining them.

I blame Noirin. If only she’d nominated Sree instead of Halfwit. What a nice thing to do to the person who saved her from drawing glasses and a moustache on her face daily.

Hopefully karma will come back to hit her next week.

What did you think of last night’s special? Please share your thoughts below.

Noirin was a proper bitch for nominating Halfwit after what he did for her.

Ivan says: June 25, 2009 @ 1:57 pm

..Get her out and have Sree join her.

Stu says: June 25, 2009 @ 2:02 pm

I’m still mad as hell, if anyone hadn’t noticed, on all the sites Noirin has lost a lot of support with the public.

Ivan says: June 25, 2009 @ 2:08 pm

Ya I noticed that too. I think next week evicion will be one of these set ups;

Halfwit -V- Sree
Halfwit -V- Noirin
Noirin -V- Sree

:D

I dont like Noirin any more! All week she has been trying to avoid Sree, and now whats happened? Two of the best housemates are up!

Stu says: June 25, 2009 @ 2:29 pm

No Ivan if only, personally I think it’s going to be Halfwit v Marcus next week. All the Angel votes will be directed at him, you mark my words.

I like Noirin I think she is playing a good game by nominating people she sees as threats

Yawn!

Andy says: June 25, 2009 @ 4:37 pm

Missed oppertunity indeed

Andy says: June 25, 2009 @ 4:49 pm

i was pleasantly surprised with the twist last night too but i think they could have taken it a step further like some how evicting 1 of them straight away or Angel and Halfwit having to choose a third person to face eviction.

Andy says: June 25, 2009 @ 4:51 pm

btw i’m surprised Angel is so far in the lead of the poll to get evicted. I think Halfwit has got as entertaining as he ever will be- i think we’ve seen it all with him, i think Angel has got loads more to offer!

Of topic, this is what i call a big brother house:
http://worldofbigbrother.com/BB/Fra/5/house.shtml
Its the current BB France house. Its amazing !!

Matt says: June 25, 2009 @ 5:19 pm

I think that’s the ugliest Big Brother house I’ve ever seen.

Ivan says: June 25, 2009 @ 5:28 pm

Wow, now that’s a house.

Ivan says: June 25, 2009 @ 5:34 pm

Kris and Sophie are apparently going to be locked in a “love room” to test if their relationship is real or not.

Steven says: June 25, 2009 @ 6:10 pm

omg are you all serious, angel is the most disturbing charactor ever, she was vile last night slavering all down herself, get her out, then get sree out, noirein isnt being a bitch to halfwit, hes a pointles shousemate who is also disguisting with his full tone and ways he expresses himself, get him out aswell.

Stu says: June 25, 2009 @ 6:17 pm

It shouldn’t take that long to prove Kris & Sophie’s lack of love for eachother, just put him in a room with her for 5 mins and see how bored he looks, then put him in a room with Charlie for an hour and see how excited and frivolous he goes.

Big Bother says: June 25, 2009 @ 6:18 pm

this has got to be the worst year in bb history

Stu says: June 25, 2009 @ 6:40 pm

I’m begining to wonder whether there’s any point in watching a programme where you can’t stand the majority of the participants.

Chris says: June 25, 2009 @ 6:53 pm

I was really dreading another live nomination show, but last night was so great! It was the fact it wasnt face-to-face that made it great, as the housemates were rushed to give reasons, but didnt worry about what everyone else thought. I agree, this should be done every week, but not in alphabetical order - then the housemates wont be expecting it! Or, maybe they should be done at random times in the week so they dont expect it that way - I think just spicing up the nominations will be enough for the show … for now.

Stu says: June 25, 2009 @ 7:03 pm

Chris, last night was a pointless exercise, they could have done that in the normal way, without the need for the live show.

Justin says: June 25, 2009 @ 8:01 pm

I agree, I thought the show last night was brilliant. I think they should have it every week, especially since it was only a 30-minute show so it wasn’t incredibly boring to watch.

Matt, I also felt the same way with the tally on the side and the absence of Marcus Bentley’s pointless narrations.

I just wish, however, that Big Brother was more harsh on the Housemates and their nominations. I mean watching an episode of BB Australia’s nominations, those Housemates have to REALLY come up with good reasons to nominate, and not just flake around, and if they don’t come up with valid reasons then they receive a nomination themselves. I like that idea too.

But, I’m still happy with last night’s show. I do think the time could have been better utilized, but the idea is, in my mind, a step in the right direction.

Ivan says: June 25, 2009 @ 10:24 pm

I agree with you completely, Justin. :P

Brekkie says: June 25, 2009 @ 11:42 pm

BB Aus though butted in far too much, barely giving the HMs the chance to explain themselves.

BB here pretty much got it right yesterday by asking for the nomination and then letting the HM give their reasons without interruption - and I think HMs could all nominate within 3-5 minutes or so without being put against the clock.

Steven says: June 25, 2009 @ 11:47 pm

RIP Micheal Jackson ;[

Ivan says: June 26, 2009 @ 12:10 am

Micheal Jackson has died in hospital in Los Angeles, at 12pm local time. He was 50 years of age.. He suffered a cardiac arrest.

andy says: June 26, 2009 @ 12:46 am

a really gd arguement just on live feed! Cant beleive it abo MJ - this is a day 4 the history books and it will b like “where were u when u heard MJ had died” and i’ll be like “i was in bed watchin big brother live feed” lol how sad is that!!

Ivan says: June 26, 2009 @ 1:26 am

I wonder if they will tell the HM’s?
They’d have to wouldn’t they? I mean, it’s Jacko after all?

Who’s been arguing?

Andy says: June 26, 2009 @ 12:38 pm

noirin was having a go at Angel for not doing any washing up.

Have you seen this about rodrigo in hollyoaks? he is an extra in tonights episode

BB10RIP says: June 26, 2009 @ 12:57 pm

Rodrigo an extra in tonights Hollyoaks. Thats another confirmed actor then in BB House IMO LOL

Andy says: June 26, 2009 @ 1:16 pm

lol i’m not sure being an extra means that he is a ‘confirmed actor’. it does show he is desperate to be on tv. it reminds me when shabnam was on the 1st or 2nd series of britain’s got talent and her talent was television presenting lol - DESPERATE-

Brekkie says: June 26, 2009 @ 1:46 pm

“No contact with the outside world” is supposed to be the most important rule of them all - so of course they shouldn’t be told.

They weren’t told of the London bombings back in 2005, and although no HMs friends/family were killed, with many of the BB6 cast being Londoners, that would have affected them all much more.

However, when new HMs go in it’s inevitable it might come up.

One thing BBUK should do though is what BB Aus used to do - as part of the final show the finalists a special news report highlighting the events of the past three months.
